Howl's Moving Castle
On Saturday night I saw Howl's Moving Castle, which was my first Miyazaki film in theatres, and only the second I've ever seen. (The first being Princess Mononoke.) I'm not sure how I felt about the movie. I didn't dislike it - I definitely liked the characters - but overall the empty, dissatisfied feeling that lingered at the end of the movie means I can't say I thought it was good, or even adequate.

Thinking about it when I got home, I think it was the lack of urgency (and detail) in the plot. It seemed as if Miyazaki's way of dealing with a dying plot thread was to toss in another quirky character. An odd 'family' of mismatched witches, wizards, demons and curse victims gather together in Howl's Castle, but outside of the quirks each character posesses you learn very little about them. I think that this could have made a potentially very interesting TV series - the plot could be fleshed out more efficiently and we could have more fun developing the characters further - but as a movie, it kinda sucked.

You need to see Spirited Away. It will make up for all of Miyazaki's other crap.

hmm, i never thought about it that way.. saw it the other day, wasn't particularly impressed by it, but it did make me laugh a few times. of course, the only reason i saw it was cuz my sister wanted to go drool over howl, who she thought was amazingly hot, despite his icky dubbed voice.

i disagree with sundaymourning though.. spirited away was meh, but i <3<3<3 nausicaa and laputa and totoro and best of all, mimi wo sumaseba. violinists are teh hawt. and definitely not crap. :D there was one movie that he made, can't remember what it was called, about this guy chasin after this idiot girl.. that one was just dumb. but the others... good. omohide no poroporo or whatever it's called was okay.. my mom and sister liked it, mostly for the guy (yet again, ha!) ;) and the grave of the fireflies... man, talk about a depressing movie! still good, even if i can only watch it once every 5 years or so. i didn't understand that pig one, though that might be cuz i was in japanese class and talking to people half the time, so maybe i'll just have to watch that again... and of course, mononokehime was pretty. :D

er....this is rather long. sorry, i like studio ghibli :D even went to the museum in japan! it was neat :)
