now - glamour & haute.

Happy HO-lloween!

I was thinking a lot about Halloween costumes today, specifically women's. Deborah's gangster costume is what brought it about; she spent the weekend (and tonight, I assume) as a 'Shady Lady':

Cost of plastic gun and plastic hat (which arrived broken) and those tiny scraps of clothing? $60.00. The cost was doubled when she had to replace the hat and gun.

But the cost isn't the issue in my mind. What I want to know is

Everywhere I look I see costumes that are tiny scraps of cloth held together with cheap lace. French maids. Fairies. Sexy Vikings and Cheerleaders. It's nigh impossible to find a decent girl's costume that doesn't expose the midriff. (By girl I mean teen/young woman. Although it's becoming harder in the child market, too, which is QUITE disturbing as well.) For every pirate I find like the Elegant Pirate Lady I find ten Wenchy McWenches.

Seriously. What's up with the cheap lingerie, girls? Explain this to me!

new favorite quote from Candide

"I have wanted to kill myself a hundred times, but somehow I am still in love with life. This ridiculous weakness is perhaps one of our most melancholy propensities; for is there anything more stupid than to be eager to go on carrying a burden which one would gladly throw away, to loathe one's very being and yet to hold it fast, to fondle the snake that devours us until it has eaten our hearts away?"
