now - tough bitch.

Habemas Papam.

Pope Francis I
So after two days of debate, the new Pope has been chosen.  Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina has become the first Pope Francis, the first Pope from the Americas, and the first Jesuit Pope.  At 76, he's not a particularly young Pope - in fact, according to this list he's in the top ten list of the oldest popes to be elected.  According to the Prophecy of the Popes, he will be the last Pope because Rome will be destroyed during his tenure.  (Of course, we all know how accurate these apocalyptic reports tend to be.)  But he's a conservative theologian, reputed to be humble and modest, with a long history of serving the poor.

I'm not a Catholic, but the Roman Church has always fascinated me because of its rich history, pageantry, complex hagiography and its patronage of the arts.  Besides, in many ways he is the face of Christianity - I may not agree with every doctrine of the Church but I think my interests and beliefs align more with the Catholic Church than, say, Billy Graham.  In fact, I'd probably convert to Catholicism the devotion to the saints didn't seem so...well, sacrilegious.

Anyway, given the many problems that have plagued the Catholic Church in recent years, I'm very curious to see just what sort of Pope this Francis shall be.
