Taxes, taxes, taxes.

It's tax day, and for the first time my taxes will be late.

Dad assures me that the Utah tax form is easy and straightforward, but I've been trying to figure out how to fill it out for hours and it just doesn't make sense to me. All over a stipend that was less than $1000! Whatever I give to Utah will be peanuts, but it seems like every time I start to fill out the form it asks me for something I can't answer or the question is structured in such a way that it seems to indicate I've been filling things out incorrectly, and I have to start over.

I guess I should have just paid a professional to deal with it, but I figured that I'm very likely to do out-of-state contracts throughout my career, so I'd better learn how to deal with the taxes on them.

I have to admit, though, if the checks hadn't been issued by a government agency I probably wouldn't have bothered to report the income. It just seems so inconsequential!

After struggling for ages, I begged my dad to do the taxes for me, so he's looking at the Utah form now and fixing it up for me. Dad says that since the amount due will be so small, Utah won't bother to charge me a late fee, so I'll mail everything out once he's finished. Meanwhile, California's taxes can't be finished until Utah is done, so that's just waiting around, too.

At least I managed to get Federal filed on time.

Next year, though, I can't let myself procrastinate up until the final deadline. It is too ridiculous.
