Lev Grossman & Book Club Books

Yesterday at the bookstore...

A man has come in with a friend and the two of them are browsing.
Man: You've got nothing but book club books here!
Me: Book club books?
Man: Yeah!

Having never been a member of a book club, I wasn't sure what he meant.  I presume he meant popular fiction, but one can never be sure.  After all, shops like Books Inc. have book clubs for a wide variety of genres.  But, a salesgirl has got to try.

Me: So what kind of books do you like to read?
Man: Oh, you know...fantasy, especially urban fantasy.  I'm looking to start a new series.

OK, so genre fiction, one that I actually read.  We begin to chat.  Neil Gaiman is good, but he's read them all.  He's not a fan of Game of Thrones; we agree that the first book is dreadfully dull.  He doesn't seen anything that interests him in our pathetically small science fiction/fantasy section, so I'm trying to think of something else we might have that will appeal.

Me: Well, have you read The Magicians trilogy by Lev Grossman?
Man: I haven't heard of that one.

I proceed to describe the book and it intrigues him enough that he decides to buy it, so hooray!  Mission accomplished.  Urban fantasy, start of a new series.

I decide not to mention that I first found out about the book when a friend picked it up for her book club.
