Happy HO-lloween!
I was thinking a lot about Halloween costumes today, specifically women's. Deborah's gangster costume is what brought it about; she spent the weekend (and tonight, I assume) as a 'Shady Lady':

Cost of plastic gun and plastic hat (which arrived broken) and those tiny scraps of clothing? $60.00. The cost was doubled when she had to replace the hat and gun.

But the cost isn't the issue in my mind. What I want to know is

Everywhere I look I see costumes that are tiny scraps of cloth held together with cheap lace. French maids. Fairies. Sexy Vikings and Cheerleaders. It's nigh impossible to find a decent girl's costume that doesn't expose the midriff. (By girl I mean teen/young woman. Although it's becoming harder in the child market, too, which is QUITE disturbing as well.) For every pirate I find like the Elegant Pirate Lady I find ten Wenchy McWenches.

Seriously. What's up with the cheap lingerie, girls? Explain this to me!

last year i was strawberry sluttycake, which was fun for me cuz i don't usually dress skanky and i got to do it in a silly kind of way (cuz i mean really, strawberry shortcake? c'mon now!). but this year i decided to opt for the more conservative girl-wallace from wallace and gromit XD

BOO. so i got pissed off at myself, refused to stand around and freeze, and went home XD this year i got to laugh at the playboy bunny girls with their asses hanging out in 20 degree weather bahahaha!

Mean Girls explains everything:
"In the real world, Halloween is the night when little kids dress up and go door to door begging for candy. In "girl world" Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no one can say anything about it."

Meh, those skimpy costumes are poorly made and over-priced anyway, spending the extra bucks to get a decent one or make a costume is really the way to go. Since I don't really sew, I do my best with things I can modify slighty or simply cut-up for my costumes which still end up sexy, but a level of sexy I'm comfortable with, as opposed to practically naked, freezing my ass off during the first major downpour of the season, which usually IS Halloween.

See, that's actually the thing above all else that confuses me. October 31st is always cold; I honestly can't imagine dressing as anything so skimpy just because I'd freeze to death in the process.

I bought a "sexy pirate" costume. It had a beautiful, well made pirate coat (with plunging neckline) and came with hot pants. I de-skanked it by wear a lacy tank top underneath and a knee-length skirt with boots. Sometimes you can only get the prettier ones by buying the slutty costumes, because in my limited Halloween costume experience, while lots of "sexy ____" costumes are cheaply made, all of the nice girl full coverage ones are ugly and cheaply made :(

A link to my costume... here!

I was also in love with the hat.

Oh, that is a good one. With a different skirt I could definitely see wearing it. Fantastic hat!
