I just want socks. How hard can it be?
Of all the evils to thwart my ambitions lately, the quest for good socks is on the top of my list. For some reason, I can't seem to find any good, basic socks for a cheap price. (I wear through socks quickly; freakishly long toes = freakishly frequent toe holes.) Target, where I previously purchased my tootsie-jackets, no longer carries any decent-looking crew or ankle socks. The brands currently available all seem to have a loose knit, and look like they'd slide around a lot in the shoe.

So where are you hip kids buying socks these days? I'm not in need of tights or leggings, no matter what the trends are trying to get me to wear. I also refuse to visit Wal-Mart, evil corporation that it is (although does anyone remember that classic Sailor Moon fanfiction where Malachite takes over Wal-Mart and it becomes Mal-Mart? Priceless.) So is Nike worth the price? Does Payless Shoes carry decent socks, or are they about as sturdy as the other footwear?

Ideas, people!

I am sockless 99% of the time and when I do wear socks (gym), I wear James' boys socks. Kali wears babylegs only.

Nike sounds like your best bet. Maybe they really last longer?

I get my socks from Zellers, where they are available in sacks of 10 for like $6.

Hmmm. Unfortunately, there is no Zellers in the US...at least that I know of...one thing for sure, they aren't in this area. Darn!

I buy a ton of socks from Target and they're all comfy and non-slide. The best pair of socks I ever bought though, were at Lady's Foot Locker, ankle, with two stripes on the side of the foot. I think it came in a three-pack. They're uber comfortable and cushy. I actually felt the difference.

I think you briefly worked at one once, so maybe there's a stigma, but have you tried Kohls?

Grrrrr @ Kohl's. I had completely forgotten about them. They would be worth checking out.

I have the same freakishly long toes and they are like fingers!

I get socks at Costco a lot of the time for really cheap. I haven't bought any for a while though since I have a lot of socks from shopping at Costco.

But they usually have pretty good socks for a decent price there. Another place to shop if you have one near you is Big Lots. They have a good selection of socks marked down pretty cheap and also don't forget Ross.

Don't get me wrong, I still think Wal-Mart is the devil...
... but if you're a fan of Penn & Teller at all, the new season of Bullshit! opened with an episode about how "Wal-Mart hatred is Bullshit!" ... and I actually found it extremely informative.

Re: Don't get me wrong, I still think Wal-Mart is the devil...
Hmmm. I have only seen one episode of Bullshit and it didn't impress me much - there was a lot of screaming and very little sourcing for the facts provided. I might have to check them out anyway, though.

(Can't I just dislike Wal-Mart because the upper management, the CEOs and the like, always come off as major jerks in interviews? It's as valid a reason as any!)

I think they're hilarious, but then again, maybe the show has come a long way from season one -- I've only seen two episodes, myself.

Personally I dislike Wal-Mart because they're dirty and crowded -- but I've also come to the conclusion that I've no super-company to replace the jobs that would be lost if they went out of business, and it's just bad economics to make a necessary evil look even worse. :P

Good socks?
If you want really good socks, get socks made for dancers (esp. ballet - I don't know what they're called), I have a couple I got somewhere that feel really good, fit really well, and wash well.

They aren't cheap though.
