Christmas Wish List 2008

OK, this post is mostly for family and close friends. The vast majority of you will not be exchanging Christmas gifts with me, so feel free to ignore it.

Preface: This is going to sound extremely ungrateful; I know. I'm sorry. But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE understand that I live at home, and our house already has a quarter century's worth of clutter piling up. I simply DO NOT have storage space for baubles, tchockies, or stuff. The items on my wishlist are not physical items for a reason.

The only reason the books are on the list is because last year, the major reason I was given that people chose not to give to charities (the only thing I requested) was that they wanted something to "put under the tree." But I put the books on the list as a last resort.

Seriously, though, folks.

Now, if after that rather bitchy diatribe you still wish to get me a Christmas present (and if you don't, that is also fine, because we all know the economy is awful this year and you should spend the money on yourself, not me) here is what I would like this year:

1. Charitable donations

My preferred charities:

2. Contribute to my Travel Fund.

There are a number of trips I would like to take in 2009:

  • Visit Kendrick, my dear sweet brother, in Boston during Easter break (March-April 2009)
  • Road trip in the summer to visit Mesa Verde (CO) and other national parks along the way, or visit the California Missions (Summer 2009)
  • Accompany my mother to Chicago, IL or Paris, France (destination is up to Mom, so it depends on the economy) (Summer 2009)

All these lovely trips cost money, and I probably won't earn enough from work to go on all of them. But with a few donations, I can definitely go to Boston, at least.

3. Help me edge closer to completing my "Classics of Western Spirituality" library, published by the Paulist Press. I've catalogued the books by religion to make the list easier to navigate (although I probably should have separated Catholic/Protestant/Orthodox texts because the Christianity list is still gi-nourmous) and the bolded titles are the books I would consider at the top of my list. But seriously, all the books are good.
Also, this series tends to be rather expensive, between $20 - $40 a title. Please, feel free to purchase used books. I like 'em just as much as new ones. (Books with highlighting/underlining does drive me a little nuts, though.) In fact, given that I haven't seen this series in the big chain stores like Borders and Barnes & Nobles, used bookstores are your best bet for locating them in "brick&mortar" locations.

If you do decide to get a book, be sure to let Seanie know, since he's "tracking" which titles are taking. (I have officially nominated him for this process now.)
