WST @ SJSU: Results
So remember that English test I took at SJSU?

I passed!
That sucks!

Why?
I was aiming for a waiver, not just a pass.  I mean, to pass is nothing.  Anyone writing and reading at a college level - which you should be if, y'know, you're going to college - could pass this test in their sleep.  But I wanted to waive the requirement to take the class completely!

I got a 73 on the multiple choice portion of the test, out of 75.  So that was passed with flying colors.  But on the essay portion, I only got a score of 9, when an 11 or 12 (out of 12) was required to pass.  My boyfriend tried to make me feel better - "The test is rigged, no one really gets 11 or 12 because they want you to pay money to take the crap class" - but I'm still mad.  I wanted that waiver!!!

And so it's true pride comes before a fall

I remember during HS I took a class at an adult school to get extra units and stuff, and they said i didn't pass the English assessment test (there was no math for the class I wanted to take). I was so frustrated because I remember my essay being a really well thought out essay!

My essay was well-written, but it was totally maudlin and I would've hated to be the reader. :-p I would probably have given myself a crap score, too! Le sigh.

Well, "rigged" isn't exactly the right word, but yeah, it's rigged. I remember talking to some profs about it and they explained that it's designed so you don't get a perfect score unless your essay was Pulitzer quality. Despite wanting to rush people out of college faster, they don't want you to skip your 100w as a rule.

Pfft, considering I had to take two English classes just to be considered for transfer, SJSU is just being petty by requiring yet another class.

Let's not even go there. I got a 12/12 - bloody perfect- on the essay part, but the Engineering department STILL made me take the class. I'm International so the classes cost about the same as small aircraft carriers :(
