Seanie is very guilty of this. It often manifests in him emptying out his pockets and dropping the contents onto a tabletop: receipts, candy wrappers, loose change, bits of plastic wrap, and so on. It drives me NUTS, especially since the whole mess gets left there for days at a time, eventually falling to the floor and spreading all over the place. He drinks sodas and lets the cans collect in a cluttered mess on his desk; he cooks food from a box and leaves the box sitting on the counter for days at a time. I mean, it takes FIVE SECONDS to put those soda cans in the recycling bin, and another thirty seconds to empty the recycling bin if it's full! But instead he lets it pile up and suddenly the house looks like a complete mess.
But at least Seanie has the excuse that he's busy. His work doesn't seem to understand the concept of days off or ending shifts after nine hours. So I'll give him that. My brother, on the other hand, doesn't have work as an excuse but trash seems to manifest whenever he comes home for a visit. He'll open an new DVD and leave the plastic wrap sitting in the middle of the floor. I'm always finding random bits of paper in the bathroom, on the kitchen table, and in a basket I keep at the front of the house for my purses. I mean, he literally cannot enter and exit the house without my knowing because he'll leave a little mess in the form of food crumbs in the kitchen or crumpled clothes on the bathroom floor! (But I'm getting off topic. Not picking up after one's self is technically another pet peeve, albeit a related one.)
To be fair, I do this too...especially the receipt thing. But if something is obviously trash, like the paper tube from a Starbucks straw or a Starbursts wrapper, than I will walk it to the trash can, even if the only one available is on the other side of the house! It's just disgusting not to.
