Shrove Tuesday

I was rather alarmed today to realize that neither my future husband or my best friend Jeans was familiar with the practice of eating pancakes on Fat Tuesday.  It is one of those traditions I grew up with; every Shrove Tuesday my father would take the family to our church for the annual Pancake Supper.  There, I would fill my paper plate with chocolate-chip-smothered pancakes, which would then be drowned in a mountain of syrup, whipped cream, and berries.

Seanie thought I was being quite silly, but I insisted that we must eat pancakes this evening.  Obligingly, we got some pancake mix and made some batter and chocolate chips so some pancakes could be fried up, more or less as I remembered them from childhood.  Seanie suspected I was making all this up, even after I found the entry on Wikipedia describing Shrove Tuesday as:

...the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Shrove Tuesday is observed mainly in English-speaking countries, but is also observed in Germany...In most traditions the day is known for the eating of pancakes. Pancakes became the food of choice so that rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sugar could be used up before the start of the lenten fast

It may be a strange tradition, but it's one I think my kids should know.  Who doesn't enjoy a day that exists for the purpose of eating  pancakes???
