Left: Concept sketch, Right: Underpainting
Work continues on the self-portrait. Today I hauled the canvas into class and continued painting. I concentrated on the face for the most part, trying to get the color right. But the one thing my teacher kept coming back to was a need for more texture, so I also popped open a can of cold wax medium and started impasto-ing the heck out of the background. I wasn't sure whether to go with red or green in the background, but eventually I went with red because I thought it would be more dramatic.
The red makes the face appear quite green - I'm not sure whether I like that or not. I might have to tone that down, but we'll see. First I have to figure out what I'm doing with the hair. I originally wanted to leave it blank and sketchy, but I don't think that'll be a good option anymore. Once I do the hair, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to darken and rough up the skin considerably, or else it won't look like part of the same piece of art. We'll see, I guess!
I really need to thicken and darken the eyebrows - even when they're freshly waxed I don't think my eyebrows are ever that thin.
