Finished the first season of The Legend of Korra

Seanie and I watched the finale of Legend of Korra today. It was a satisfactory conclusion to the series, but after it was finished I was left feeling a bit frustrated with the overall series.

As a sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, Korra has a great world to play in and a ton of amazing characters to build on. When the writers worked on creating Republic City, things went well. Initially, I thought that the technological development seemed rushed – could they have really come that far roughly eighty years? But after the first comple of episodes, I got used to it and decided that yes, it was possible, especially since we see little of the world outside the city. Just because there are cars and electricity in the city doesn’t mean it has penetrated to every corner of the world – so fine. I can live with it.

The plot was almost unbearably rushed, though. That was disappointing. It makes sense, I guess – Nickelodeon only paid for 12 episodes, so it’s not like they had a lot of time to play with. But the series is so fast-paced that it becomes choppy. Character development, which was one of the hallmarks of the original series, is sacrificed to speed the story. Mako and Asami are flat and dull. Iroh barely exists, since he only appears in the two-part finale. I still liked many of the characters – Tenzin, Amon, Lin Beifong, Bolin and of course Korra – but they just aren’t as interesting as Zuko, Katara or Aang.

And that love triangle/rectangle…ugh. The teenage angst inspired by everybody’s little crushes bogs the story down into the muck. Granted, it’s a realistic portrayal of teenagers, who simply thrive on drama, but UGH.

Oh well. It looks like there will be another season, entitled ‘Spirit’ – will we get to see more of the spirit world? That would be cool. One of the best contrasts between Aang and Korra has been her extreme physicality and his deep spirituality.
